"Tell me a story. A ghost story. Something scary. Something...dreadful."
Actress Marin Keane has just gotten the role of a lifetime. She's working for a famous director, and is the main character opposite a legendary actress.
With trepidation she reads the diary of Daisy Rue, a girl with special abilities who came to the island of New Avalon in 1926 in the hopes that her gifts of speaking with the dead could be used for good. Also on the island are several other women with the same hopes and different abilities. One by one every one of the women disappear, with Daisy herself being the last taken.
In the present, Marin and her cast mates are dressing like their counterparts in the past, and are encouraged to become the characters as much as possible. The film they're doing is a re-enactment of the mysterious events of 1926. Once they start replicating the seances from the diaries, everything changes for the actors. They feel as if there is something on the island that existed in the past, that has been unleashed, and then they begin to disappear one by one.
The Unknown is a great scary ghost story, which unfolds in the past and present. Marin is not a tough heroine, she's uncertain of herself, and she hopes to survive the five days the troupe is scheduled to stay on the island, not sure who she can trust.
